Transtibial Sockets

Another variant of the patellar-tendon bearing socket, which also encloses the patella to further restrict some motion and reduce knee hyperextension (Murphy, 2013; Spires, Kelly & Davis, 2013).

Patellar tendon bearing socket
Supracondylar socket
Supracondylar/suprapatellar socket
Total surface bearing socket

Allows pressure and weight bearing from the patellar tendon, medial tibial flare, popliteal fossa and posterior wall (Murphy, 2013). This helps to ensure that less pressure tolerant areas are relieved, such as the tibial crest, distal end of tibia and fibula, and fibular head (Spires, Kelly & Davis, 2013).

Variant of the patellar-tendon bearing socket, with extension proximally above the knee. (Murphy, 2013; Spires, Kelly & Davis, 2013). Used for knees with medial/lateral instability (Murphy, 2013).

Distributes loading equally over the entire surface of the residual limb (Murphy, 2013; Spires, Kelly & Davis, 2013)
